What is Christian Democracy?
Christian Democracy is a political ideology that emerged as a major player in European politics in the aftermath of World War II. Christian Democrat parties seek to bring people together from across the political spectrum on the ground of shared values that can form the basis of a thriving society. Through unique ideas such as subsidiarity, distributism, and communitarianism, Christian Democracy offers a third way to society that is distinct from the Progressive and Conservative ideologies familiar to most people.
Christian Democracy is not to be confused with Christian Nationalism. Although Christian Democracy was originally developed by Christian political philosophers, it does not seek to legally enshrine Christianity, and its ideas are actually common to most major world religions and philosophies. Christian Democracy is neither distinctly Christian (though it is consistent with the teachings of Christianity), nor is it Democrat (although disaffected Democrats certainly can find a home in Christian Democracy).
Why the Pelican?
The symbol of Advocates for Solidarity, the American Solidarity Party, and Christian Democratic parties around the world is the pelican, just like the elephant symbolizes the Republican Party or the donkey symbolizes the Democratic Party. The pelican was chosen for its traditional connotations as a symbol of self-sacrifice. According to legend, the mother pelican would feed her young in times of need by piercing her own breast. In the same way, Solidarians believe that politics (and society in general) needs to be shaped by a self-sacrificial attitude, rather than the power struggles that are all-too-common nowadays.
